Pulses from Southern France: Small distances. Big benefits.

How did this project come about?

Pulses, seeds and grains are often sourced from outside Europe. Long transport routes entail a higher risk in terms of product availability and also have a negative impact on the CO₂ footprint of the imported raw materials. With BioGascogne in the south of France, HALBA has found a producer that combines organic quality and agroforestry with short transport routes.

What does the project do?

BioGascogne is a family-run organic business in the province of Armagnac in southwestern France. In addition to its organic agriculture, the company has been implementing agroforestry methods on parts of its land for 15 years. HALBA has been sourcing most of its green lentils and chickpeas from BioGascogne and has maintained a fair and friendly partnership with this supplier since 2016. This successful business relation has expanded considerably over the years. As well as green lentils, BioGascogne also supplies HALBA with yellow peas, red kidney beans and linseeds.
