Hazelnuts from North Macedonia: reducing social risks sustainably.

How did this project come about?

Eighty per cent of the world’s hazelnuts come from Turkey. Unfortunately, Turkish hazelnuts bear the risk of child labour in the harvesting process. To reduce social risks, from Turkey, HALBA only purchases Rainforest Alliance–certified hazelnuts. HALBA further seeks to establish a sustainable value chain for hazelnuts in other countries in Southeast Europe.

What does the project do?

In Nelkoski Organic, HALBA has found a promising new partner in North Macedonia: it is the country’s first hazelnut producer that is certified to Bio Suisse standards. By offering advice on cultivation and processing matters and supporting local farmers in their transition to the Bio Suisse certification, HALBA and its partners are contributing to strengthening the existing value creation process, ensuring its sustainability, boosting hazelnut production and creating additional supply chains. We aim to identify further suitable businesses in collaboration with our partner, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL).
